Deuteronomy 5:16; 6:6-7
Our Role as Children > Appreciate your mom (this Mother's Day), for 9 months of carriage, years of nursing and parenting you. > Jesus identified God longing to gather his children "as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings" (Matt. 23:37). God is the one who created man and woman in his image and cares for them. > Obey (Eph. 6:1-3) and Honor (Deut. 5:16) your father and mother. Honor is broader in sense, while obedience can be done without honoring or respecting someone. > Promise for honoring parents: 1) long life, and 2) it will go well with you. Our Role as Parents > Deut. 6:4-9 is the command for parents to find opportunity to "impress our children with God's word." To put up the word on "door frame" means to make a public statement of our identity (as we do with political signs today). To keep the memory of the word "when you lie down, get up, sit, walk…" tells what diet should we feed up on a daily basis. > Eph. 6:5 "Bing them up in the instruction and training of the Lord." How can we do so effectively? "Decide in advance when and where you will take specific actions to reach your goal can double or triple your chances for success," said Heidi Grant Halvorson. > Take part in the fellowship, such as lifenet groups of the church with your kids. > Love them.
