God's Mercy – Not Getting What We Deserve

30/7/2017

The cross is the meeting point of God's justice versus man's injustice (1 Pet. 2:22).
God's character encompasses both justice (the throne) and mercy (rainbow) in the heavenly picture of Revelation 4:3.

Mercy is kindness or favor shown to who is in an unlikely position to receive it. Mercy ministries around the world work to help the poor.

God is a merciful God (Deut. 4:31; Neh. 9:31; Jonah 4:2; Dan. 9:18). King David had to rely on God's mercy in his last days (2 Sam. 24:14).
A tax-collector was praying for and a blind man was begging for God's mercy (Luke 8:13, 38).
God owes us nothing, but gives us everything.

Beneficiaries of God's mercy are required to be merciful to others (Matt. 5:7; 9:13; Lk. 6:36).
The Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37)…
  • notices another man's needs;
  • is touched by another man's pain;
  • acts in love, ready to pay the price;
  • excludes no one.

God's Call and Plan for Us

23/7/2017

Jeremiah 1:1-10

Why are you here? You have your purposes and plans for coming here, for coming into Myanmar. God also has His own purpose and plan for calling each of us.

God's call is based on His knowledge of us.
God calls us for His purposes. The answer should be our "Yes," because it is the call and assignment from the highest authority over us.

Jeremiah gave excuses – reasonable ones. We often do so today.
But God prepares you if He has a plan for you. "I will give you the words to speak."
God is waiting for us, not that we are waiting for God.
He is within us in Spirit, He is everywhere, waiting for our response to His call.

Can we do it? We cannot do it by ourselves. We have to be dependent on God.
Are we afraid? He said, "Don’t be afraid, for I will be with you always."

Our response must be to glorify God in all we do and say.
If we obey Him, this city will not be the same. The Word and Spirit of God (His presence) go with us always. We should not be afraid to go and share the message of the good news with great joy.

Adventure in the Vineyard

16/7/2017

John 15

God has a purpose for each of us. What is God's purpose for calling you to Myanmar?

Jesus sends His disciples to go and bear fruit.
We can bear fruit only if we abide in Christ.
  • Grape vines are very dependent on the owner's care and pruning in order to be fruitful; wild vines hardly bear fruit but immature bad fruit.
  • Similarly, we depend on Christ to bear fruit.

We bear the fruit of the Spirit as the Spirit leads us.
  • When the Spirit of truth comes and testifies of Christ to us (v.26), we also testify and bear witness (v.27).
  • Jesus wants to share his joy in the Father with us and for our joy to be full.
  • Life in the vineyard is a glorious adventure!!

The Light of the Truth

9/7/2017

John 3:19-21; Proverbs 23:23

Judges 21:15
This negative picture of God's unfaithful people is still true of many so-called believers today. They know the truth is near, but they choose to live by whatever is right in their own eyes.
The Nature of Truth
  • Unchanging in this changing world – "Time discovers the truth." Mahatma Gandhi once said, "Morality is the basis of things and truth is the substance of all morality."
  • Truth is light that reveals.
  • It is not too flexible to accommodate, as it rather drives away darkness.
  • Absolute truth thrives and endures for eternity. “It is easier for heaven and earth to pass away, than for one stroke of a letter in the law to be dropped.” (Luke 16:17) Contra pop philosophies of relativism, skepticism, postmodernism, pluralism.
Jesus as the Truth
  • The world of darkness rejects the light of the truth, because they love darkness/evil deeds.
  • The right response: To adjust ourselves to accommodate and be tuned into the truth. "People don't want to hear the truth because they don't want their illusions destroyed." (Friedrich Nietzche)
  • “I am the truth” (John 14:6)
  • “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:32).
  • “In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.” (John 18:37)
What to do with the Truth?
Proverbs 23:23
Buy the truth and do not sell it – wisdom, instruction and insight as well. (NIV)
  • What do we buy these days?
If we only buy what is pleasing in our own eyes, then we won't buy something we perceive as not so interesting or pleasing. The hard fact is anyway that truth is not always appealing or pleasing.
We may think of several reasons or excuses for not buying the truth, but at the heart of the matter is the underlying reason, as mentioned in the holy Scripture, "people loved darkness rather than light because their deeds were evil." That is the truth behind the world's rejection of the Truth.
  • How do/can we buy the truth?
We don't buy truth with money, or it is injustice that suppresses truth.
To actually live by truth is costly, and we sometimes pay the price to hold on to it in conflicting circumstances. We do so, at the cost of our sinful way of life, at the price of any loss or suffering.
  • Why?
Because we love evil deeds or darkness. We don't want to receive the light that would reveal our true self inside out. Over against this very reason we must change and be exposed in the light of truth before God's holy presence.

"Bread of God"

2/7/2017

"Bread of God"
(John 6:33)

The cross vividly shows that Jesus, the king of kings has given us all he has, received the cup on our behalf, and that we are inscribed on his palms and remembered forever. He came down from heaven and gave life to the world. He is the bread of God. In Him, we have new life.
